Tips on Choosing the Perfect Shelter For Your Dog
Many residents choose to keep their dog outside and although we prefer the family pet be housed indoors, it is not illegal. However, it is in violation of city ordinance #505.08 if the dog does not have a dog house.
The house must be of proper size for the dog, have proper bedding and a flap over the entrance. Common sense dictates the doorway should face towards a building to minimize wind entering the doghouse.
Frozen water is not considered fresh water, so you may want to invest in a heater that will keep the water thawed. The dog should be fed additional food providing it with the extra energy it will use to keep warm A garage, shed, enclosed porch or any other building, is not considered proper shelter.
When the outdoor temperature drops into the teens the dog should be brought into the house even if kept in the basement. Even longhaired dogs can suffer from iceballs between their toes and on the pads of their feet. They may also suffer from frost bite.
Should we receive a complaint and find it to be valid your dog will most likely be taken to the shelter if you are not home. You may or may not be issued a citation depending on the severity of the violation. If charged, your dog will remain at the shelter until your case has been heard and completed in our municipal court. All impound and board fees must be paid before the dog is release.
It is our responsibility to do everything within the guidelines of the law to insure the animals in our City are cared for properly. We, however can not do this without the help of our residents. Neglected animals can not help themselves so it is up to you to notify us if you suspect animal neglect or abuse. You may remain anonymous if you wish.
Would you have more animals if you could, but can’t because you do not have the room or the place you live will not let you have any more?
Volunteering with the Sydney NSW Animal Rescue Center is your answer. Become an Aunt or Uncle to the NSWAR animals.
You could fulfill your need for more animals in your life and fulfill the needs of the approximately 70 dogs and 45 cats that are in the care of Nswar. Volunteers are the life blood of our centre. There are NO paid employee so we could not survive without our volunteers.
Not even the director of NSWAR gets paid and works a full time job besides taking care of the animals.
Volunteers do a variety of tasks at the shelter and at public events. There is something for every physical ability and time constraints. Giving 30 minutes of your time a day or a week, means so much. A lot can get done in that time. Not all of them involve getting dirty either.
Here are just some of the things you could do:
- Clean dog kennels, and feed and water
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 4 hours. It depends on which sections you do. How dirty the kennels, food bowls, and water bowls are. And how much you want to play with the dogs.
- Clean the kitty barn, clean litter pans, and feed and water
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 4 hours. It depends on what needs to be done. The litter boxes do not get emptied and cleaned every day. Most days they just need to be scooped out. How dirty the floors are. How many food bowls and water dishes need to be cleaned. And how much you want to play with the cats. The enclosed patio area is a wonderful place to sit, relax, and hold the cats or play with them after a long day.
- Take care of the cats at the Petco Adoption Center in Rogers
Time Requirement Varies: 30 minutes – 1 1/2 hours. It depends on how dirty the cats get their kennel. If the litter boxes need to be emptied, cleaned, then refilled. And how long you want to stay to give them attention. All supplies are provided.
- Help at Adoption Events such as the Howl-o-ween event in October or adoption days
Time Requirement Varies: 1 – 5 hours. Depending on if you pick up an animal at the shelter to take to the event then bring it back. Or if you you help set up the event or just help at the event. Length of the events vary too.
- Help with fund raising and grant writing
Time Requirement Varies: It will depend on the activity or event that is planned.
- Help with donation collection
Time Requirement Varies: It will depend on how you plan to collect donations.
- Transport of Animals to the vet or to a transport to a truck driving school
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 8 hours. It depends if you just take an animal to the vet and drop it off or if you wait and bring it back.
- Miscellaneous: There are many other tasks that need to be done from time to time through out the year. Such as organizing the supply and office trailer or cleaning travel crates. There is always a variety of things that need to get done.
Time Requirement Varies: It depends how messy the trailers are and how many crates need cleaned. Or whatever else that needs to be done.
