Tips on Choosing the Perfect Shelter For Your Dog

Many residents choose to keep their dog outside and although we prefer the family pet be housed indoors, it is not illegal.  However, it is in violation of city ordinance #505.08 if the dog does not have a dog house.

The house must be of proper size for the dog, have proper bedding and a flap over the entrance.  Common sense dictates the doorway should face towards a building to minimize wind entering the doghouse.

Frozen water is not considered fresh water, so you may want to invest in a heater that will keep the water thawed.  The dog should be fed additional food providing it with the extra energy it will use to keep warm A garage, shed, enclosed porch or any other building, is not considered proper shelter.

When the outdoor temperature drops into the teens the dog should be brought into the house even if kept in the basement. Even longhaired dogs can suffer from iceballs between their toes and on the pads of their feet.  They may also suffer from frost bite.

Should we receive a complaint and find it to be valid your dog will most likely be taken to the shelter if you are not home. You may or may not be issued a citation depending on the severity of the violation.   If charged, your dog will remain at the shelter until your case has been heard and completed in our municipal court.  All impound and board fees must be paid before the dog is release.

It is our responsibility to do everything within the guidelines of the law to insure the animals in our City are cared for properly.  We, however can not do this without the help of our residents.  Neglected animals can not help themselves so it is up to you to notify us if you suspect animal neglect or abuse.  You may remain anonymous if you wish.

    Volunteers NEEDED

Would you have more animals if you could, but can’t because you do not have the room or the place you live will not let you have any more?

Volunteering with the Sydney NSW Animal Rescue Center is your answer. Become an Aunt or Uncle to the NSWAR animals.

You could fulfill your need for more animals in your life and fulfill the needs of the approximately 70 dogs and 45 cats that are in the care of Nswar. Volunteers are the life blood of our centre. There are NO paid employee so we could not survive without our volunteers.

Not even the director of NSWAR gets paid and works a full time job besides taking care of the animals.

Volunteers do a variety of tasks at the shelter and at public events. There is something for every physical ability and time constraints. Giving 30 minutes of your time a day or a week, means so much. A lot can get done in that time. Not all of them involve getting dirty either.

Here are just some of the things you could do:

    • Clean dog kennels, and feed and water
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 4 hours. It depends on which sections you do. How dirty the kennels, food bowls, and water bowls are. And how much you want to play with the dogs.
    • Clean the kitty barn, clean litter pans, and feed and water
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 4 hours. It depends on what needs to be done. The litter boxes do not get emptied and cleaned every day. Most days they just need to be scooped out. How dirty the floors are. How many food bowls and water dishes need to be cleaned. And how much you want to play with the cats. The enclosed patio area is a wonderful place to sit, relax, and hold the cats or play with them after a long day.
    • Take care of the cats at the Petco Adoption Center in Rogers
Time Requirement Varies: 30 minutes – 1 1/2 hours. It depends on how dirty the cats get their kennel. If the litter boxes need to be emptied, cleaned, then refilled. And how long you want to stay to give them attention. All supplies are provided.
    • Help at Adoption Events such as the Howl-o-ween event in October or adoption days
Time Requirement Varies: 1 – 5 hours. Depending on if you pick up an animal at the shelter to take to the event then bring it back. Or if you you help set up the event or just help at the event. Length of the events vary too.
    • Help with fund raising and grant writing
Time Requirement Varies: It will depend on the activity or event that is planned.
    • Help with donation collection
Time Requirement Varies: It will depend on how you plan to collect donations.
    • Transport of Animals to the vet or to a transport
Time Requirement Varies: 1 hour – 8 hours. It depends if you just take an animal to the vet and drop it off or if you wait and bring it back.
    • Miscellaneous: There are many other tasks that need to be done from time to time through out the year. Such as organizing the supply and office trailer or cleaning travel crates. There is always a variety of things that need to get done.
Time Requirement Varies: It depends how messy the trailers are and how many crates need cleaned. Or whatever else that needs to be done.

A Fun Loving Four Legged Addition to Your Family

One very important issue to be factored into your decision making process is ….. children. Though the correctly trained and nurtured dog will do nothing but bond with and protect your children, there is always the slight risk of a dog harming your child. The choice you make in this case depends on how confident you are in your abilities to raise and discipline a dog. They need a firm but loving hand – a bit like children, really!

You may already know exactly what type of dog you want because you’ve either had experience with that particular type before or you know someone who highly recommends that particular breed as a family dog. That is a good basis to work on.

    Will Your Dog’s Sex Matter?

I would say yes. In our experience we have found some breeds will be happy family dogs and others will be “one man dogs” and even within the breeds, females tend to be better family dogs than males.

I can hear a thousand voices raised in protest and I am so inclined to agree. We have had some wonderful male dogs – but I must say, weighed up against the females, I’ve always felt safer with having female dogs around my children.

I have loved my boys (and we have had some beautiful boys) – but even though we have never had a single incident of an aggressive dog in our family – just the sheer nature of a female dog makes her a safer option as a family dog if you have children.

Is Anyone in the Family Allergic to Dog Hair?

Though most dogs shed hair on a regular basis and moult quite heavily seasonally, the following is a list of supposedly non-moulting breeds:-

    • BEDLINGTON TERRIER
    • POODLE
    • FOX TERRIER (WIRE)
    • YORKSHIRE TERRIER
    • PORTUGUESE WATER DOG
    • BICHON FRISE
    • MALTESE
    • AFGHAN HOUND
    • KERRY BLUE TERRIER
    • TIBETAN TERRIER
    • WESTIE

However, do be aware that these dogs usually need clipping at least two to three times a year, to keep their coats in good condition. As an aside – we have had two dogs which moulted much above the average that we would expect for that breed and at that time of year. It turned out that some dogs suffer of flea allergies and will promptly lose much of their coat if bitten by a single flea. Apparently, this occurs in 1 in a 1000 dogs. We had two of them at the same time – just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes!!

We live near wooded areas, frequented by hedgehogs and fox – so try as we might, we never could keep our dogs totally flea and tick free. So this presented us with quite a problem as having a family dog which lost enough hair to create another dog – was not my idea of fun!

We discovered the best way to treat these dogs is to use a flea and tick repellant which kills fleas before they have a chance to bite. The medication I am happy to swear by in this case is Frontline.

Frontline comes in a spray (which our dogs just hated) or in tiny vials which you drop directly onto the skin between their shoulder blades (they never even noticed we were doing it!). You will see signs of improvement within the week and the effects last for up to three months.

    Day to Day Responsibilities

The other thing which often gets overlooked in the excitement of getting a family dog, is who is the family is going to be responsible for what!

Your children can often be the driving force behind getting a family dog, but unless you’re happy to end up doing everything yourself, do take the time to emphasize to them the responsibility of the role they are taking on.
